Fluoride and Dental Sealants

What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a naturally occuring mineral found in tooth enamel that protects it from acid attacks from bacteria. The tooth enamel is the external structure of teeth that shields softer inner structures like dentin from the bacteria. Every day, our teeth lose and gain fluoride in a cycle of demineralization and remineralization, so it is essential to brush regularly to keep fluoride on our teeth at ideal levels.

There are other sources of fluoride other than tooth paste, such as tap water and fluoride tablets which are prescribed by dentists. Here at dental Corner, we offer fluorid gel and varnish should you need an extra boost of fluoride for your teeth.

What are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are thin plastic coats painted on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Some teeth have deep channels and gaps, which are an ideal spot for bacteria and debris to gather. This is why certain teeth such as molars are more prone to developing cavities than others. A sealant fills in these pits and channels of teeth with a plastic compound to prevent bacteria from accumulating.

Mostly kids and adolescents get sealants but sometimes grown-ups may benefit from this treatment as well. The procedure is non-invasive and fast. The surface of the teeth (typically molars) are painted with a fluid plastic material. This material is then cured with a solidifying light, allowing the sealant to to block cavity-causing bacteria from the tooth.
