Fresh breath and healthy teeth

Bad breath — known medically as halitosis — is a common concern, and in most cases it's completely preventable. Understanding what causes it is the first step to keeping your breath consistently fresh.

What causes bad breath?

Poor oral hygiene is the primary cause. When plaque isn't removed, it becomes a breeding ground for the bacteria that cause periodontal disease and cavities — and the odor that comes with them.

  • Strong foods like onions and garlic
  • Tobacco use
  • Poorly fitting or unclean dental appliances
  • Dry mouth and dehydration

How to prevent it

  • Brush at least twice a day and clean your tongue.
  • Floss daily to remove trapped food and plaque between teeth.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three months.
  • Use a mouthwash to freshen breath and fight bacteria.
  • Quit tobacco.
  • Drink water regularly to keep your mouth hydrated.
  • Schedule dental check-ups twice a year.

If bad breath persists despite good habits, it may point to an underlying dental or health issue. Book a visit with Dental Corner and we'll help you find the cause and the right solution.
