We all brush our teeth, but few of us do it perfectly. In fact, brushing alone misses more than half of the germs in your mouth — which is why cleaning between your teeth, your tongue, cheeks and the floor of your mouth matters just as much. Here are the most common brushing mistakes, and how to correct them.
Using the wrong toothbrush
Hard bristles can wear down enamel and irritate your gums. Choose a soft brush with round-ended bristles that clean effectively without causing damage.
Keeping your toothbrush too long
An old, frayed toothbrush can't clean properly. Replace yours every two to three months, or sooner if the bristles start to splay.
Brushing with the wrong motion
Straight, back-and-forth strokes miss the most important spots. Instead, move the brush in gentle circles, holding it at a 45-degree angle to the gums. This cleans under the gumline, where most bacteria are present.
Not brushing long enough
Many people brush for only about 30 seconds. Dentists recommend at least two full minutes, twice a day, to properly clean every surface of every tooth.
Get these basics right and you'll remove far more plaque and protect your gums for the long term. Pair good brushing with daily flossing and regular check-ups at Dental Corner for the best results.
